MPLS and MOT Concepts

The MPLS over transport solution  meets all the above requirements of designing back-hauls for 3G. To have a brief over-view about the MPLS over transport let us consider its basic aspects.

1. Can be provisioned over the existing SDH infrastructure.
2. Can have efficient BW optimization.
3. Can have TDM like redundancies with very low convergence rates.
 MOT (MPLS over Tranport Port):

The basic unit that one needs to consider after enabling the MPLS license in the card (MCS) of  ems is the creation of the MOT port. MOT stands for MPLS over transport port. MOT port is just like the EOS ports that were created before. The MOT port also has the following sub-objects.

1. VCG (Virtual Concatenated Group).
2. GFP. (Generic Framing Procedure, this is the encapsulation technology for passing L2 frames over SDH).
3. EOS (Ethernet over SDH object).

    Creation of MOT:

    The amount of BW that is required to be protected in worst case scenario = 8Mb/s Per node.

    Number of Nodes = 3

    Thus the amount of BW needed to be protected in this entire ring = 8X3 = 24Mb/s

    To protect a BW of 24Mb/s we need a ring infrastructure of 24Mb/s and this is the reason that we would create a MOT infrastructure of 24Mb/s = 12XVC-12 for this ring.

    we now have a infrastructure of MOT trails of VCAT size = 12XVC-2 in the entire infrastructure.

    Creation of Tunnels:

    After the CAC distribution is done the thing comes of creation of tunnels.
    Creation of tunnels for OAM & SYNCH:
    As per our calculations we are putting OAM and SYNCH on the highest priority in the Anti-clockwise direction. Also since this is going to be on the highest priority we put this on Cos6. We overbook this Cos6 to a factor of 4 because it is highly improbable that we would be needing 2Mb/s dedicated for each and every Node B for management and synch. The presentation below will show the creation of tunnels for Synch and OAM both protection and bypass.

    Creation of Protection at C-16:
    After the creation of tunnels it is important to create services. In order to create services the following thing has to be understood in a clear context.
    Port protection at the C-16 Location.
    Card protection at the C-16 location

    Port and card protection at C-16 location:
    There is requirement of load balancing and port protection at the C-16 location which can be taken care of by means of the static LAG solution provided by ECI MCSM cards. The Equipment protection can be taken care of by means of IOP.

    Service creation:

    The nature of the service for 3G would be a kind of P2MP hub and spoke service. However we need to know few things for this.

    Each node B will give different Vlan instances.
    Each node B will give 802.1P bit to prioritize traffic.
    There should be proper isolations of Broadcast domains for the Node Bs.

    Under the following conditions we have two kinds of approaches for service creations. Both of which are acceptable norms.

    Can you please provide details of below points which are still confusing while MOT trail creation.
    1.While MOT creation in NMS lightsoft there is a options for MOT
    which should be used?
    2.While Tuneel creation for diffent COS i.e.if i am using 4 cos then all tunnel’s i m creating unprotected and later on making them fully protected or proteced by updating FRR protection.
    Pls provide proper procedure for making tunnel bypass
    3.While service creation,policer are important EIR,CIR,BSC pls provide details for the same.

    Also which protocol we are using for MOT,pls provide details.

    I heard there is work going on for MPLS over Ethernet (MOE) which will be used in place of MOT and also ERPS.
    Could you please elaborate on these upcoming technologies ?

    there is only one major difference between mot and moe.

    MoE is made on physical layer by selecting GeEth port on both ends and GBe as the data rate.

    The above topology can be directly seen on MPLS/ETH layer with any more trouble. 🙂

    Rest all including tunnel creation to creation of bypass tunnel is the same

    BTW MoT and MoE both are dual edge swords cos both have one major drawback.
    If 2 nodes in a single ring fails it will result in failing of the whole ring.

    So be cautious b4 u go ahead and implement technology in your network…
